July 24–28, 2006, Salt Lake City, Utah

The Nikolais Legacy Workshop was hosted by the Ririe-Woodbury Dance Company in collaboration with the Nikolais/Louis Foundation for Dance, and supported by the NEA, George S. and Dolores Doré Eccles Foundation, Zions Bank, Utah Humanities Council, The Utah Arts Council, Salt Lake Arts Council, Phillips Gallery, Coby Zerky at Color Edge Visual, John and Marcia Price Foundation and the City Library. The week featured daily classes, lectures, forums and showings in all aspects of the art of dance in technique, theory, and improvisation. In addition, lighting, music, photography, slides of Nikolais works, alumni works, and a preview of the reconstruction of Nikolais’s work Tent were presented.

Participants, including Nikolais alumni, teachers and dance enthusiasts, came from Australia, Scotland, France, Switzerland, Italy and Spain, and from 30 states in the USA spanning seven decades (1942–2006) of dancing and dancers making art with the Nikolais aesthetic.

The occasion offered a stunning exhibition of Tom Caravaglia’s photographs and a showing of the films of the art of Alwin Nikolais. However, the star of the occasion was the Nikolais aesthetic.

What an affirmation of dance as art and art as human experience this week has been! This mixed bag of dancers of all ages and sizes, improvising and making dance gave me the best spectator dance experience I have had in a long time. Not just once, but day after day for five glorious days.
